The UFC had an incredible night with their September PPV in UFC 266, with two title defenses and an exciting return from a legend.
In the main event, Alexander Volkanovski won a unanimous decision over Brian Ortega, with the pair being awarded “Fight of the Night.” The third round of this incredible war will go down in infamy, as Ortega knocked down and nearly submitted Volk MULTIPLE times. That was all for naught after Volk reversed into top position and unleashed some hellacious ground and pound, nearly stopping the bout.
Both Chris Daukaus and Merab Dvalishvili earned performance bonuses for their efforts on the ESPN News prelims.
Daukaus battled Shamil Abdurakhimov and effectively knocked him out twice in the two round contest. He flattened him with a gorgeous right cross, capturing his fourth straight UFC knockout.
Merab Dvalishvili got a big step up in competition courtesy of Marlon Moraes, and had to push through some serious adversity to capture the win. Moraes knocked Merab down in the first round and nearly ended the fight. However, “The Machine” scored a takedown and transitioned to top position, raining down heavy ground strikes. In the second round, Merab continued where he left off, scoring over a HUNDRED unanswered strikes before the referee stepped in, awarding Merab the second round TKO and his first UFC finish.
The UFC gets back to action next weekend with UFC Vegas 38, headlined by a Light Heavyweight clash between powerful strikers Thiago Santos and Johnny Walker!
