April is set to be a big month for the Middleweight division. Marvin Vettori and Darren Till will duke it out on April 10th with Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa previously set to go on the 17th for what would most likely be number one contender ship.
Yesterday, Costa confirmed that he has to withdraw from his main event slotting opposite Whittaker due to coming down with the flu.
Just 24 hours later, and Whittaker already has a new opponent booked.
Kelvin Gastelum will be fighting against Whittaker in a rebooking of their scheduled bout for UFC 234, which fell through over two years ago when Robert Whittaker suffered a hernia the day of their title match. The pair were opposing coaches on the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), with the reality show taking a hiatus since.
After that meeting fell through, Gastelum dropped three straight defeats, but got back on the winning track in his last outing, beating Ian Heinisch in a decision.
Whittaker and Gastelum will serve as the five round main event for UFC Vegas 23.
