Last July, Jorge Masvidal saved the UFC 251 card by stepping in for the COVID-ridden Gilbert Burns.
The megastar was yet another victim of Kamaru Usman, losing a lopsided decision on under a weeks notice.
Usman made another defense following that victory, knocking out the aforementioned Burns just last month. Usman took the opportunity in his post-fight interview to once again call out Masvidal, an unusual choice for a dominant champion in a division stacked with contenders.
The champ has stated that Masvidal’s excuse for the defeat is the reason he is pursuing a rematch, as Jorge has repeatedly claimed that the short-notice nature of their first contest was to blame for the defeat.
Well, he will have a chance to prove it. Just minutes ago, it was confirmed that Usman and Masvidal will be running it back at UFC 261, set to take place on April 24th.
The card is stacked already, with two other title fights already set to go. In the co-main event, Weili Zhang will look to defend her Strawweight title for the second time opposite Rose Namajunas, while Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade are set to go ten pounds north.
Most notably, UFC president Dana White announced that this card will be taking place in front of a full crowd in Jacksonville, Florida. This will be the first UFC event to host a full audience since last March.
