Cody Garbrandt suffered a tough loss in the main event on Saturday. However, due to his performance and the toughness of his opponent, his bantamweight ranking dropped only one spot. He is now ranked at number 5 which pushed Jose Aldo up to the number 4 spot.
In the middleweight division, Jack Hermansson pulled off a gritty victory over young phenom Edmen Shahbazyan showing that Shahbazyan still needs work on his grappling game. Hermansson moves up one spot to number 6 which drops Darren Till one spot to number 7. Meanwhile Shahbazyan shows no movement in the rankings and retains his spot at number 10.
Carla Esparza’s dominant and extremely violent victory over Yan Xiaonan caused a domino effect in the women’s strawweight rankings. Carla moves up to number 3 while Xiaonan drops to number 4. In addition, Marina Rodriguez moves up to number 5 while Mackenzie Dern drops to number 6.
Carla Esparza also caused a good amount of shifting in the women’s “pound for pound” rankings. To start, Carla jumps up four spots to number 9 while Aspen Ladd falls two spots to number 11. Other movements included Yan Xiaonan falling two spots to number 13, Claudia Gadelha falling one spot to number 15 and Julianna Pena making a new appearance into the rankings at number 14.
The only other ranking shifts to report are due to a retirement of one of the greats. Paul Felder, who worked the broadcast desk on Saturday night, was given a moment between fights to take the floor and officially announce his retirement as a fighter. He has now been removed from the rankings causing each of the fighters below him to move up one spot. They are as follows: Islam Makhachev number 9, Gregor Gillespie number 10, Kevin Lee number 11, Diego Ferreira number 12, Drew Dober at number 13 and Thiago Moises at number 14. As for the final slot, Arman Tsarukyan has now been inserted into the rankings and is currently ranked number 15.
