The LFA is returning for its second week of action in a row, bringing a ten-bout fight card to The Commerce Casino & Hotel in Commerce, California.
The vacant Flyweight title is up for grabs in our main event as surging prospect Cody Davis takes on exciting finisher Igor Siqueira. The card also features prospects like Rafael do Nascimento and Giovanna Canuto, looking for statement performances.
Cody Davis (7-1) vs. Igor Siqueira (9-1) (Vacant FLW Championship)
After a decision loss to highly venerated prospect Mark Climaco, Cody Davis rebounded with two straight submission victories, last seen securing a first-round submission over the previously undefeated Mark Climaco. He has crisp striking and mixes in his kicks well, especially to the lead leg, but the highlight of his game is in his wrestling and composed aggression from top position. Siqueira impressed on the regional scene with seven stoppage victories with his jiu-jitsu and submission threat, even off his back, being his key weapons to victory. I see Davis utilizing his wrestling advantage to repeatedly ground this fight and work from top position before finding a choke when Siqueira’s gas tank begins to falter.
My Pick: Cody Davis via Submission
Renato Valente (9-6) vs. Adriano Rodrigues (18-6-1) (MW)
Edit: Fight canceled.
Valente is much better than his record indicates, bringing heavy hands and a versatile submission offense. While his jiu-jitsu is solid, his wrestling often falters. Rodrigues is getting a step up in competition here and can impress wherever the fight goes with fifteen stoppages to his name. He has heavy hands and a dangerous submission offense backed up by solid wrestling, though his defense can be a concern as he often lives and dies by the sword. Valente has the power to stop this on the feet along with the BJJ to hang on the mat, and I see him likely getting ahead if Rodrigues cannot find a finish. I’ll side with the superior experience of Valente to wade through the early fire, but this is not a confident spot, betting-wise.
My Pick: Renato Valente via Decision
Rafael do Nascimento (8-2) vs. Jordan Winski (12-4) (BW)
Rafael do Nascimento impressed with two finishes in the LFA before suffering a decision loss to Jerrell Hodge. Nascimento is most impressive with his slick jiu-jitsu and quick submission skills, though he also showed the power in his Muay Thai with a knockout of Justin Wetzell. Jordan Winski is a Bellator veteran who is also impressive on the mat, though he looks to dominate more with his wrestling and top pressure. While I do believe this is much closer than the betting lines indicate, I like Nascimento to outwork Winski for a decision
My Pick: Rafael do Nascimento via Decision
Danny Silva (6-1) vs. Rafael Barbosa (14-5) (FTW)
Danny Silva is returning after his first career setback, a majority decision loss to Canaan Kawaihae. Silva is a technical boxer with excellent shot selection and combinations, though his defense off his back is an area I would like to see more from. Barbosa is a well-rounded veteran of the Brazilian regional scene, last seen dropping a decision to Mairon Santos in the LFA Octagon. He has heavy hands and works his Thai boxing combos well with dominant top pressure on the mat. I am not sold on Barbosa’s ability to get this fight to the mat, and I like Silva to work his boxing from range to get back in the win column.
My Pick: Danny Silva via Decision
Giovanna Canuto (4-0) vs. Hilarie Rose (6-6) (SW)
Giovanna Canuto has impressed with four straight victories in the LFA, including three first-round submissions. She is a high-level BJJ practitioner and displayed her control and cardio skills in her last outing, a unanimous decision over Jamie Colleen Miller. This fight actually seems like a step down in competition from the criminally underrated Miller, as we have seen Rose suffer submission losses in her last two contests. I expect Canuto to get this to the mat early to get back on the finishing track.
My Pick: Giovanna Canuto via Submission
Alex Valentino Arteaga (4-1) vs. Isaac Thompson (4-1) (FTW)
Edit: Fight canceled after Arteaga missed weight.
Thompson impressed me in his last LFA outing, displaying his hand speed and accuracy en route to a decision win over Gary Konkol. He is a slick striker with excellent movement and three knockout wins, though his head movement could use improvement. Arteaga is a fun grappler with a knack for quickly grabbing submissions but is outgunned on the feet here. I expect Thompson to deny takedowns and pick Arteaga apart for a finish.
My Pick: Isaac Thompson via Knockout
Jeffrey Craig (3-1) vs. Sarek Shields (4-1) (WW)
We have an excellent stylistic clash headlining our prelims here. Craig is a fluid striker who loves timing his entries with movement and quick explosions and boasts decent defensive wrestling, though he can be controlled and outpointed on the feet. Shields has a grappling-heavy style and is dominant once secured in top position, though his defense and movement on the feet are serious concerns. This bout likely comes down to whether Shields can repeatedly secure takedowns and keep Craig on his butt, as he is clearly outgunned on the feet. While I think Craig will have massive success standing, I see Shields being able to slow this fight down and consistently land takedowns for a narrow decision victory.
My Pick: Sarek Shields via Decision
Emmanueli Adzoh (3-2) vs. Barrington Bishop (3-0) (WW)
Edit: Barrington Bishop has been replaced by the 0-0 Luis Francischinello. While I have Adzoh picked in this matchup, lack of tape has me leaning away from any bets.
Bishop has really impressed me to this point, showcasing his heavy hands and technical striking along with a wealth of grappling experience and sneaky choke entries. While his opposition has been fairly poor to this point, he’s not getting a major step up here, as Adzoh was last seen suffering a quick knockout loss in the LFA. This has all the makings of a setup fight and I expect Bishop to close the show quickly.
My Pick: Barrington Bishop via Knockout
Daniel Park (1-0) vs. Alex Carrillo (0-0) (FLW)
Carrillo is stepping in here on short notice and I’m looking forward to seeing more of his skillset after not competing in almost two years. Park has fought for the LFA before in his amateur career and has a well-rounded style with the ability to finish on the feet or the mat and mixes in control when he needs to. While I think his head movement needs improvement, I see Park grounding this fight frequently and either scoring finish on the mat or dominant decision.
My Pick: Daniel Park via Decision
